I was reluctant at first to blog about Truphone, because it’s a subject which appears to have been covered by a lot of other blogs, but they seem to be mostly regurgitating the opinions of others as well as things mentioned in press releases, so I decided I may as well write about my user experience.
I quite like it, but I have a few problems with it which I’d like to point out, some of which will need to be corroborated by other Truphone users if possible.
It may just be me, but their site doesn’t seem to render properly in FireFox, some menus are not visible until I mouse-over, their login interface is a little clumsy and the site is generally slow, at least for me. So that’s something they’ll need to work on, luckily they’re still in the beta phase which means that these bugs will hopefully be ironed out at some point in the near future.
The application itself makes my E61 a little sluggish, it takes a bit longer to boot up than it did before as truphone decides to launch itself at start up, rather than when I want it to, I suppose people want to be able to use their VOIP service instead of their GSM provide (god knows I do) but it should give me the option to not have it launch at start-up.
However Truphone does have a lot of great aspects to it, the sound quality is very good, and most importantly I’ve got free calls to UK landlines and 39 other destinations until the 31st of March. This obviously means that I’m not the one who uses it the most, it’s my mother because anything which offers free calls obviously means she can call her sister for hours at a time…
I’ll probably continue to use Truphone, because I can call people for free on other VOIP services, and receive calls from them. On the other hand I also have my E61 set up to use sipgate, which also offers free calls to and from other VOIP providers, the cool thing would be the ability to call skype users and to be called by them.
Skype are evil by not having a working Symbian client available for download, which I find somewhat alienating because I’m not really one to sit in front of my computer and talk to people that way, but free calls from my mobile is a completely different matter, one where I’d welcome a portable Skype client.
Going back to Truphone, as I said I may continue to stick to them unless they end up being more expensive than sipgate in which case I’ll go back to using them…Or we might end up in the situation where one is cheaper than the other for certain things, in which case I’d use them both.
Lastly, and this is my main problem with truphone, is as previously mentioned that it starts up as soon as I switch on my phone, which means my phone tries to connect to the wireless network specified by the access point truphone wants to use, which means that it connects to my home network if I’m at home.
Why would I have a problem with that? (And this isn’t some paranoid issue)
I have a problem with it, because if the E61 is connected to a wireless network it drains its battery roughly twice as fast as it usually would.
I hope you found this helpful.
