Hack Day

Sweet. looks like Hack Day is coming to London!

Their site is pretty neat, and I’d quite like to emulate it, it features text which is rot13 encoded, but as soon as you move your mouse over it, the text automagically changes to something which is easily readable, but you expect geeks to read rot13 without a problem, right?

I highly doubt I’ll be chosen to get one of the 500 spots, seeing as I’m around the 5k mark of applicants, but it would be pretty sweet if I did. I’d relish the idea of being able to learn as much as the event would offer, I’ve had an interest in web APIs for quite a while now which sadly hasn’t been allowed to be fully expressed due to me being too busy with my studies…

It would probably also give me an opportunity to increase my autograph collection a tiny bit because AlanCox’s signature is starting to feel a little bit lonely and I was unable to get any at the most recent LWE.

Maybe I’d even learn things I’d like to implement on one of my domains, while giving me an excuse to do something productive over the holidays…Not to mention a chance to get together with some of Britain’s most nerdiest people!

Obviously I’d take an array of pictures for you viewing pleasure.

Bye for now.

Update

Filed under: General — Andreas @ 9:30 pm

I’ve started on my revision, sadly I’ve not yet done as much as I would like to due to a piece of coursework which I still need to complete, it’s really quite lame that everything has to bunch up like this…

Which reminds me, I was playing with the idea of going to glastonbury this year, but tickets are not only ridiculously expensive, the event starts on a day I have an exam and I have another one the day after. Both of these are extremely stupid synoptic papers which makes it even more of a bummer!

So much for that, I suppose I can always try it next year… It’s a shame really since I really wanted to see CCR do Bad Moon Rising >_>

I should also get around to looking for a job!

Anyway that’s it for my current update, expect more on friday!

File security

Filed under: Blogverts — Andreas @ 9:27 pm

Obviously everyone has files they would like to keep secure, privacy is one of the prime concerns of any normal human being, so why shouldn’t it extend into the digital world?

I like to be secure, and don’t really like the idea of just anyone being able to read my most personal data, or emails which I might be exchanging with people. That’s why I sign most emails I send out with GPG, but if I wanted to I could encrypt these messages as well as any files I might be attaching as well.

But what if you want to send many files at a time? Why not just stick them into a ZIP archive?

SecureZip integrates easily with MS Outlook, by far one of the most commonly used email clients on the windows platform. So if you think sending encrypted archives might be just the thing you need when sending out those naughty pictures or important business documents why not give it a try?

SecureZIP - The next generation of ZIP

I’d test it myself but I don’t have access to a computer which uses windows, so I’ll just stick to my hippy Linux OS.

Current Status

I’ll probably be dropping off the face of the earth for 90% of my time over the next 2 months or so!

Why you ask? (Assuming you’re one of the few people who read this and actually care)

I’ve got my final A-Level exams coming up in June, so I’m going to use that time to brush up on what I’ve done in the last two years so that I can pass with decent grades (read Bs), otherwise I’m not going to get into my University course!

I obviously wouldn’t want to do that, and since I don’t want to become an unemployed bum or a theology student I’ll have to make that little sacrifice.

Narconon

You may have your own opinions about L. Ron Hubbard and the church of Scientology, especially after certain recent events, but did you know that he’s also behind a drug rehabilitation program?

I did some research on him, and after reading up on his own drug habits it certainly doesn’t surprise me that he’d try and help other people with similar problems, so this program which involves high vitamin and mineral intake as well as a lot of exercise may be just for you…

The Stone Hawk drug rehabilitation program is situated in what can only be described as a rather Serene environment beside a private lake which is even stocked for fishing. Situated within comfortable driving distances from both Chicago and Detroit it would obviously be well suited for people based in those areas.

I urge you to research any sponsored subject I may write about, and this is no different. If anything you should research it considerably more as drug treatment is something not only needed by a lot of people but also a major part of their life should they make the decision to undertake treatment.

Note: This post is sponsored by the Stone Hawk treatment facility.

Wordpress Themes

I’m told my current theme is too plain, and if I’m honest I’d have to say that I’m getting rather bored with it myself.

As a result I’d like to know if anyone can recommend a good theme, and please only suggest those which you’d also use yourself otherwise I’d probably end up with something more ridiculous than the current one.

The other option would be that if someone out there is artistically skilled and takes pity on me, maybe they’d be kind enough to design one for me, what better way is there to support a random blogger than making them a custom theme?

Obviously I’d credit the generous spirit by letting them insert an url of their chosing in the footer as well as linking to their site directly!

So please help and let me hear from you soon!

And now for something completely different

I remember reading a blog post concerning a research paper on people having sex in MRI scanners. Well it’s not really a paper about sex in an mri scanner, but a paper on the way our sexual organs align during coitus.

How things fit together must have fascinated people for centuries, since the paper references a picture drawn by none other than Da Vinci himself, which does seem to indicate a certain fascination with sex by humanity as a whole, who’d have thought?

 MRI Coitus

Of course thanks to modern science we no longer have to rely solely on our imagination, dead bodies and a variety of medical instruments (which reminds me did I ever tell you about the periscope vibrator?) but complete scans of the human body which give us definitive pictures of how each of us fit together!

  Da Vinci's Coitus

If that isn’t a scientific breakthrough I really don’t know what is, and why don’t I ever get asked to take part in scientific studies?

On a somewhat more serious note, while the women seemed to have a good time all but one man failed to perform without chemical help, I’m not sure about anyone else but to me this reveals some interesting things about the female psyche.

It either suggests that women like to be watched by a group of nerdy men while having sex, or they like to do it in dark enclosed spaces such as mri scanners, drain pipes, car boots and the like.

I’d like to think they’re both true, and that it warrants some serious study!

Book Swaps

Filed under: Blogverts — Andreas @ 7:59 pm

Back when I used to play nationstates I decided I wanted to read the book it was based on Jennifer Government, and mentioned it on a forum I was part of with other people from my region, one of them mentioned they had read it and liked it, and also that they’d be prepared to swap it for something I like, so I sent her a copy of The Hotzone by Richard Preston.

We both liked our respective books, and after mentioning to a friend who also played the game at the time, we decided we’d trade books again. This time I was sent a copy of Asimov’s foundation series in German and sent my friend Jennifer Government.

I quite like Asimov’s writing and wasn’t disappointed by it, even though German doesn’t particularly lend itself to science fiction!

You could therefore say I quite like the idea of swapping books after reading them, sadly after looking into it on a much grander scale I decided that the biggest site about the subject used leaving books on park benches as a delivery method and feeling that my chances of doing it again were pretty slim.

I’ve now found a UK based site which allows you to swap books easily and securely since all books are coming through the mail, this means you don’t have to rely on the kindness of strangers who leave books on a park bench, this obviously also lowers the risk of someone else picking it up or you being arrested as a suspected spy.

The cool thing about it is that you can also use it to swap DVDs, Games and Music CDs, so there really is something for everyone and not just bookworms like me, it’ll also mean I can get rid of some of my unwanted DVDs :p

On a more serious note, do check it out as it’s a pretty cool service and one I’ll be definitely using myself as it struck me as something new and cool to try out and see for myself how it works, I’ll definitely write about it again to relate my experiences so far.

Oh and do check out their dev blog which is just full of interesting information, for example they were featured in the Guardian! I didn’t know that but then I’m more of a Times reader…

For the low low low price of $28,600 you can get a hand-crafted, lacquer-finished maple wood case with “Good” and “Evil” players, such as Santa Claus, God, Mary Poppins, Lucifer, Jack the Ripper, and Hitler (You can guess who’s who). There are only 20 tables made, so you better act fast.
