Theme

Suffering from another spell of insomnia, I thought it might be a good idea to write a quick post. Even though I have data to suggest that you freaks now stay on this site for several minutes on average no one has shown any interest in coming up with a logo outside of immediate circle of friends. i will therefore enable the theme later today, unlless I have another last minute job interview, and use the logo provided by a friend.
However should anyone feel the need to come up with one, I’ll display them on the site.
Which reminds me; as I didn’t specify a size feel free to use what ever I like for your first “draft”.

Buffy

I love Buffy it’s one of my favourite shows ever and Joss Whedon’s has a history of brilliant shows, which I enjoy enormously so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that I also quite like Buffy.

I mean what isn’t to like? Especially in the first season with all of the cheer leading practice and dancing and… You get the idea.

I’m sure it’s fairly obvious that I’ve been watching Buffy again (I’m currently on a bit of a marathon which could account for the lack of motivation to do other things like updating my blog’s theme), I will probably dig out all my other Vampire films and watch those too, including the Blade trilogy.

I quite like the Vampire genre as a whole because it ranges from the extremely serious to the plain comical with several variations in between, where else would you get James Woods dressed from head to toe in chain maille trying to speer vampires while cracking rather dry jokes? Or George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino stuck in a Mexican tavern with even funnier vampires?

And don’t get me started on how funny the Scream movies were…

New Look! And possible contest goodness?

Filed under: General — Andreas @ 8:54 pm

I’ve decided to implement a new theme, and will probably do so some time tomorrow evening, I was going to get it up and running tonight but I’m lacking the modification to do very much on it…hence tomorrow.

I’ll also get around to either using the logo someone made for me, or I might try and create my own but sadly all the designs I have come up with are a mix of a very psychedelic background and a rather crap font, ergo I need a decent font.

However if you feel sorry for me; you may want to take pity on me and submit one or several designs. If I decide to pick your design you will receive a small SuSE tshirt, or my appreciation (which ever is cheaper).

So I guess this is a logo contest.

GUK ‘07

On Friday I went to the Gentoo UK social, had quite a lot of fun and met several people I haven’t met in over a year and others who also went to LRL’07, I also got a Gentoo tshirt out of it :p

(I really should see if it’s possible to get one’s entire wardrobe for free by just going to a bunch of conventions)

The actual event was on Saturday, and was also quite interesting! I quite enjoyed the security talk which was held there, which sadly didn’t go into very much detail and didn’t seem to last as long as the others.

What was also disappointing was the lack of the promised cluster talk, one of the reasons I decided to go, unless I missed it when I went to lunch with a few people, even though everything was on schedule, so I couldn’t have making it even stranger.

I returned from LRL at around midnight on Sunday and was extremely lucky not to have missed the last train, otherwise I would have been buggered.

That little piece of information is for those of you who knew I was going to LRL this year, for those of you who didn’t, LRL is a giant nerdfest with a great atmosphere, extremely interesting talks and it makes you feel that being one of the 5% who don’t use Windows or Mac OS* is a great thing.

In fact it feels as if the talks are just there to keep people from getting bored while they’re waiting for the loud rock music to start and the pub to open up, which it probably is but extremely informative nevertheless.

I wish I could remember more of it, but the truth is that I ended up getting extremely drunk (I blame cheap drinks. Note: Anywhere outside of London has cheap drinks), so what I remember of the party on Saturday night is extremely limited, I don’t even remember how I made it back to the hotel. I do remember being in the hotel lobby for what seemed to me to be about 15 minutes, I was told the next day that it was closer to two hours and that I had to be led back to my room whilst trying every door on the floor before finding mine.

All in all a very successful weekend, I’m sure I would have enjoyed the Sunday even more had I not been busy trying to stay awake after very little sleep (I ran a bath at 4 or 5am for some unknown reason), then having to wait around for the coach.

So in conclusion, LRL fucking rocks so please go to it next year, people are very supportive of drunkards and make sure you don’t die choking on your own vomit, however next year I’ll probably stay an additional night on the friday and take a train instead. I was a cheapskate which is why I decided to take a coach up there in the first place, very big mistake.

It was hot and uncomfortable, crowded and ended up going through milton keanes on the wway back… Trains rule.

Hope you enjoyed this, by the way I’m going to upload the huge amount of pictures I took some time today, all five of them.

Spaaaaaaaaam

So some fuck is sending out spam from spoofed addresses from this domain.

This makes me very unhappy, because not only do I run the risk of getting on some kind of blacklist, I’m also getting a tonne of error messages from the affected recipients.

I hope whoever it is dies in a fire, while I try to find a way to fix it.

Park your files

With many web based email services limiting their attachment size you often find yourself having to use other ways of transferring data to people. Some people may use instant messengers or other file transfer protocols which are often rather slow, while others use various websites available to quickly and easily share files with friends or colleagues.

Online File Sharing is often a necessity in today’s world and one which can be made severely difficult by 10-20MB attachment limits. Driveway enables you to upload and share files of up to 500MB, making your life a lot easier because you can send that archive you need to transfer for work/school/family in one go rather than having to split it into several pieces.

Driveway

As you can see from this screenshot it offers you a very simple to use interface making uploading of your files extremely easy and quick. As hopefully obvious from the picture you do not have to provide a recipient email address or your own, something not available with some of the similar services out there, as a result you can directly link people while in communication with them instead of having to rely on their email service and what ever spam filters they might employ.

Speaking from personal experience I had quite a few emails sent to me by a friend marked as spam because my email service thought her holiday pictures constituted spam, something you could avoid.

So take a look and please tell me what you think as I appreciate your feedback and would love to have some user input regarding this service. After all this is a new service and should therefore be open to suggestions!

Powerball

Filed under: General — Andreas @ 2:49 pm

I’ve previously mentioned that I bought a powerball, what I didn’t mention is that I’m finding it extremely hard to get it above 10000rpm, so it’s either a problem with my technique or I need more practice.

Another thing which was evident when I bought it is how much noise they make even when properly operated and not damaged, so I’ve been unable to practice because it drives everyone around me nuts as soon as I hit the higher rpms.

Maybe I should use it outside and look like a compete weirdo :D

Visiting Prague

Filed under: Blogverts — Andreas @ 1:43 pm

Going to Prague is on my list of things to do, and is either right behind or right above going to Amsterdam which I’ll hopefully get to do some time this year and if not then definitely next year.

One priority as a student are obviously Cheap Hotels in Prague but interesting places to see, especially for someone with an interest in photography like me, are also important thankfully Prague offers both.

For example the TV Tower which stands as an example of communist architecture, or the dancing house or the jerusalem synagogue, not to mention the castle and various bridges.

I have no doubt that if I were to go there, and hopefully I’ll be able to fairly soon, I’ll find something which interests me, and if I recall correctly the cometary isn’t too bad either.

Hydroponics

Filed under: Random geekery — Andreas @ 1:27 pm

While everyone else is probably writing about what a giant cock-up the iPhone is, I’m going to focus on hydroponics because I’m not everyone else.
Now for those of you not familiar with hydroponics, it’s a wonderful thing in which plants are grown in a soil less medium through the use of nutrient solutions. This means that you can grow plants indoors, but through the use of lights and the ability to accurately controlling pH levels, CO2 concentration and nutrient levels you can also end up with much bigger plants or anything you want really. One problem of hydroponics in my mind is that it’s prohibitively expensive with small kits which only support 3-4 plants running well into several hundred pounds, which is why I tend to check ebay for any bargains.

As always the case with eBay, hydroponics on there is one of my pet hates because the majority of ebay sellers are a bunch of complete retards. Why are they complete retards? Reading the descriptions of several hydroponics related items, one is left with the view that only people who grow illegal drugs in the form of cannabis use hydroponics, slandering the whole concept!
Sure, indoor cannabis growers might use hydroponics but a lot of people who don’t grow cannabis also use hydroponics, so rather than leading people to believe that only people with some kind of nefarious plan might be interested in hydroponics, why not generalise it?

Writing “You can get 3kg of bud with this system” might attract some idiots to your product but it reflects badly on legitimate gardeners and those who’d like to try hydroponics, after all it is gardening of the future anyone who is into science fiction knows that…

If you’ll excuse me I’ll go back to my bunker deep underground where I’m safe from idiots.
