Generic Viagra (not spam, honest)

I’m bored right now, and since I know a bit about the industry as a side effect of studying for my degree I thought I’d take a little time out and share since people seem confused about.

There is no such thing as generic Viagra/Sildenafil, and that’s the end of this post…

…the reason there is no such thing as the above is due to the patent not having run out yet, pharmaceutical patents generally run out after 20 years or so, meaning that currently Pfizer have the sole right to manufacture. As they have the sole right to it, no one else is allowed to manufacture it and you therefore do not get any generics.

Anything marketed as generic viagra/sildenafil is therefore illegal and likely not to contain any, contain it at different than advertised concentrations and may not have been manufactured to the rigorous standards seen in normal pharmaceutical companies.

At a lecture given by the MHRA (the UK medicines regulatory body) I found out that interestingly enough a lot of these fake drugs do contain the active ingredient but at the wrong/varying concentrations as well as a number of other substances which may or may not be good for your health.
