Online economics

As you may or may not know already, in the last couple of years various MMORPGs have become big business, and not only for the companies which run then.

People have been making livings in Second Life for example, and one or two people I know have given up their traditional jobs and are now working in SL and let’s face it who doesn’t want to go to work in their underwear?

Obviously these games also have their own economies, which are very much dictated by supply and demand of certain items, just as in the real world. Interestingly enough those games usually enable you to buy time cards with in game money once you’re one of those lucky people who make enough money to pay for one.

And where does this money come from? Well, some people work for it, but the other option is obviously to buy it…Which is great if you find something you just have to buy, some kind of fancy new sword for example.

Which is where GameGoods come in, you can go to their site and buy warcraft gold, EVE ISK, Guild Wars Platinum and many other in game currencies.

The site itself is laid out well as one would expect, and they accept a large variety of payment options, which is extremely important. For example when I was trying to buy an EVE time card, it took me quite a while to find a site which accepts PayPal, in fact it wouldn’t be too bad if GameGoods started selling time cards some time in the future…

Their employees are active Gamers thenselves, so should you have any problems they would probably be not only happy to answer your queries but also answer them in a very competent manner.

One thing which I can’t find on the site is a way of selling your in game currency, which would be something worth looking into, as many Gamers out there would probably be willing to do, so it’s certainly worth investigating.

Overall, GameGoods seem like exactly what someone looking for a quick in game cash injection would be looking for, I’d give it a more in depth review, for example mentioning response times on customer service queries and delivery times, but I don’t have any current subscriptions at the moment.

Pubs and the like

If you’re like me then you probably enjoy going to different pubs, and you’re probably always looking for the perfect pub. Maybe you’re one of those people who wants to prove Orwell wrong by trying to find a pub which has more than eight characteristics listed in “The Moon Under Water”…

Or you may just be looking for a cool place to hang out with some friends for a while, in which case Trusted Places can help you, it allows users to rate and review pubs and anything else, from Off Licences to London restaurants.

It even ties in with facebook, so if you already have an account there, you won’t have to register with trusted places.

Overall a pretty cool site and one I’ll keep an eye on.

Park your files

With many web based email services limiting their attachment size you often find yourself having to use other ways of transferring data to people. Some people may use instant messengers or other file transfer protocols which are often rather slow, while others use various websites available to quickly and easily share files with friends or colleagues.

Online File Sharing is often a necessity in today’s world and one which can be made severely difficult by 10-20MB attachment limits. Driveway enables you to upload and share files of up to 500MB, making your life a lot easier because you can send that archive you need to transfer for work/school/family in one go rather than having to split it into several pieces.

Driveway

As you can see from this screenshot it offers you a very simple to use interface making uploading of your files extremely easy and quick. As hopefully obvious from the picture you do not have to provide a recipient email address or your own, something not available with some of the similar services out there, as a result you can directly link people while in communication with them instead of having to rely on their email service and what ever spam filters they might employ.

Speaking from personal experience I had quite a few emails sent to me by a friend marked as spam because my email service thought her holiday pictures constituted spam, something you could avoid.

So take a look and please tell me what you think as I appreciate your feedback and would love to have some user input regarding this service. After all this is a new service and should therefore be open to suggestions!

Visiting Prague

Filed under: Blogverts — Andreas @ 1:43 pm

Going to Prague is on my list of things to do, and is either right behind or right above going to Amsterdam which I’ll hopefully get to do some time this year and if not then definitely next year.

One priority as a student are obviously Cheap Hotels in Prague but interesting places to see, especially for someone with an interest in photography like me, are also important thankfully Prague offers both.

For example the TV Tower which stands as an example of communist architecture, or the dancing house or the jerusalem synagogue, not to mention the castle and various bridges.

I have no doubt that if I were to go there, and hopefully I’ll be able to fairly soon, I’ll find something which interests me, and if I recall correctly the cometary isn’t too bad either.

Another credit card post

I’ve not done a sponsored post in quite a while now, and since I’ve got a lot more free time now at least until I find myself a job I thought I might as well make a new one.

This one is relevant to me as it allows me to express my general view on credit cards which I see as a tool, and don’t really have a regular need for which is why I decided to get a random pre-paid card which I can use when ordering online which won’t accept the debit card provided by my bank or paypal/google checkout. So far I’ve not used it but you never know, the only problem I have with it is the fact that they take a £3.50 loading fee.

Now I could apply for a CC from my bank or anywhere else after having various compared credit cards, but I like the idea of using a prepaid card for certain things, because they’re disposable and if I get ripped off there is no chance of someone cleaning out my bank account.
Obviously certain people are interested in balance transfer credit cards but that mainly applies to people who have cards and want to switch.

So in conclusion: I view credit cards as a tool to purchase stuff which I want and can afford, mainly for online ordering rather than something to borrow against and then pay off later. I guess that’s an extremely responsible attitude to have as a 19 year old, and I doubt it’ll change.

Want to hire me?

PayPerPost have recently made some new changes to their website, which as usual include some visual changes but also quite a few technical changes, most of which are for the better!

For those of you who still don’t know what PayPerPost do, they enable bloggers to make money using their blog.

As you can see from my previous post I can now look at the ban text set by advertisers, sadly it doesn’t reference who left the ban otherwise I’d know who to stay clear of because the bans I’ve received so far were completely unjustified and needlessly tarnish my background as a PayPerPost user.

Another new feature is the ability to reserve a post for much longer than ever before, which depending on how you look at it is either a bad thing or a very good thing! You can now reserve a post for six hours instead of one, which not only gives you enough time to have some coffee but it should also be more than enough time for someone to come up with a “cracking” post. However I’m sure some people are going to feel let down by this time increase if they feel that people rush at certain opportunities, reserve them and then take their time in the knowledge no one else is able to complete the opportunity.

Personally I view it as a major improvement as I tend to find myself writing a couple of sentences then reading something and completely forgetting about a post, by the time I’ve finished my reservation might be over and I find myself with a wasted post.

The most exciting new feature has to be PayPerPost direct, which enables advertisers to hire a blogger directly by clicking on a badge on their blog. PayPerPost then act as a kind of escrow agent making sure that everything runs smoothly so that the blogger gets paid and the advertiser gets the post they paid for.

Furthermore it significantly decreases the markup charged to advertisers from 35% to a 10% service fee with 5% consisting of credit card processing and paypal fees, not bad eh?

I’m so excited that I replaced my PayPerPost affiliate badge with a Direct badge which will enable anyone to hire me for the price stated by the badge, currently $15 but this may increase in time.

So if you think I’m exactly what your product needs don’t hesitate to hire me and I’m bound to produce a quality post for you!
However this post is really only a quick break from studying with my first exam on Monday, so hiring me before June 28 is probably not a very good idea.

Celebrity Dating

Actress, Mirelly Taylor, has appeared on movies such as Kiss Me Again and Serving Sara and television shows including “Las Vegas”, “Punk’d”, and “Numb3rs”.

The contest will be running on gofish.com for the next 14 weeks, where hopefuls can submit their own videos in order to be in with a chance of being the lucky winner.

For those of you who don’t know what GoFish is, you can get Free videos at GoFish.com and is therefore similar to all the other free video services out there, except they don’t offer you a chance to win a date with Mirelly Taylor!

I’m sure you’ll want to know my thoughts about it, and to be honest I’m not surprised, with so many reality TV programs out there it was only a matter of time that one would involve its audience through online content, especially with today’s prevalence of the ‘net. As viewers are able to submit their own videos they actually become part of the program itself, again an internet first and highly innovative.

So if you’ve always wanted to date a celebrity, and let’s face it who hasn’t?

Now is your chance to do it, so go on and enter the contest!

Personally I think the guy who looks a bit like Elvis will probably win…

File security

Obviously everyone has files they would like to keep secure, privacy is one of the prime concerns of any normal human being, so why shouldn’t it extend into the digital world?

I like to be secure, and don’t really like the idea of just anyone being able to read my most personal data, or emails which I might be exchanging with people. That’s why I sign most emails I send out with GPG, but if I wanted to I could encrypt these messages as well as any files I might be attaching as well.

But what if you want to send many files at a time? Why not just stick them into a ZIP archive?

SecureZip integrates easily with MS Outlook, by far one of the most commonly used email clients on the windows platform. So if you think sending encrypted archives might be just the thing you need when sending out those naughty pictures or important business documents why not give it a try?

SecureZIP - The next generation of ZIP

I’d test it myself but I don’t have access to a computer which uses windows, so I’ll just stick to my hippy Linux OS.

You may have your own opinions about L. Ron Hubbard and the church of Scientology, especially after certain recent events, but did you know that he’s also behind a drug rehabilitation program?

I did some research on him, and after reading up on his own drug habits it certainly doesn’t surprise me that he’d try and help other people with similar problems, so this program which involves high vitamin and mineral intake as well as a lot of exercise may be just for you…

The Stone Hawk drug rehabilitation program is situated in what can only be described as a rather Serene environment beside a private lake which is even stocked for fishing. Situated within comfortable driving distances from both Chicago and Detroit it would obviously be well suited for people based in those areas.

I urge you to research any sponsored subject I may write about, and this is no different. If anything you should research it considerably more as drug treatment is something not only needed by a lot of people but also a major part of their life should they make the decision to undertake treatment.

Book Swaps

Back when I used to play nationstates I decided I wanted to read the book it was based on Jennifer Government, and mentioned it on a forum I was part of with other people from my region, one of them mentioned they had read it and liked it, and also that they’d be prepared to swap it for something I like, so I sent her a copy of The Hotzone by Richard Preston.

We both liked our respective books, and after mentioning to a friend who also played the game at the time, we decided we’d trade books again. This time I was sent a copy of Asimov’s foundation series in German and sent my friend Jennifer Government.

I quite like Asimov’s writing and wasn’t disappointed by it, even though German doesn’t particularly lend itself to science fiction!

You could therefore say I quite like the idea of swapping books after reading them, sadly after looking into it on a much grander scale I decided that the biggest site about the subject used leaving books on park benches as a delivery method and feeling that my chances of doing it again were pretty slim.

I’ve now found a UK based site which allows you to swap books easily and securely since all books are coming through the mail, this means you don’t have to rely on the kindness of strangers who leave books on a park bench, this obviously also lowers the risk of someone else picking it up or you being arrested as a suspected spy.

The cool thing about it is that you can also use it to swap DVDs, Games and Music CDs, so there really is something for everyone and not just bookworms like me, it’ll also mean I can get rid of some of my unwanted DVDs :p

On a more serious note, do check it out as it’s a pretty cool service and one I’ll be definitely using myself as it struck me as something new and cool to try out and see for myself how it works, I’ll definitely write about it again to relate my experiences so far.

Oh and do check out their dev blog which is just full of interesting information, for example they were featured in the Guardian! I didn’t know that but then I’m more of a Times reader…
