Overdue update

This week will be my last week of work and then I will finally be free, or at least until the time Uni starts again.

The office I’m working at this week is interesting as everyone here still uses disinfectant hand gel, and staff/me are required to make visitors use it as well.
It may have something to do with the fact that the building is owned by a Taiwanese company and they’re more worried as they had experiences with Swine flu and Avian flu now.

Media hype seems to have died down completely now and I will be going to Edinburgh on Friday morning so I’ll be able to see what they make of it up there when I am not clogging my arteries with deep fried and battered cheeseburgers.

Blown over

Judging from what I’ve seen at work people don’t seem to be concerned about swine flu any more and the mass hysteria has come to an end, mostly demonstrated by me not constantly having to inhale fumes from the spirigel dispenser as visitors have stopped using it.

I could ask them to use it but where I’m currently working the policy has been for visitors to only use spirigel/anti-bacterial handrub if they’ve used public transport, and most of them pop to the loo before appointments anyway so one would hope that they wash their hands.

It’ll be interesting to see whether the supposedly predicted massive epidemic will happen and whether the government will have to start digging mass graves and staff crematoria 24 hours a day as one paper has suggested.

Looks like we’re banding together

After some discussion with someone (Miguel) I met last Monday, we’ve come to the decision that we’re going to be starting a bike polo group in Leicester as soon as possible, as well as going on group rides and the like.

It’ll be interesting from an organisational standpoint and to see how many people we can rope into it.

I’ll probably look into starting a bike related society at Uni, or at least into what funding and insurance they offer.

How to chemically burn your eye (or not)

Develop a roll of film and then while fixing take it out, unspool a part of it to check and hold said piece and roll of film up to the light above your head.
The resulting drip should hit you right in the face somewhere around the eye.

Luckily I’m a ninja and dodged it so that it only hit my shoulder.

I should probably start wearing goggles.

Parts needed

I’ve got two unrelated projects on the go at the moment for which I’m lacking parts and I was wondering whether I could use the internet to scrounge some…

So does anyone have some aluminium ski poles they no longer need or an old neoprene diving suit?

If so please get in touch.

More on Marble Arch

As it turns out the fountains aren’t running because people stuffed rubbish down the jets while they were bathing in it and they are now being repaired.

It’s annoying considering they were very pretty fountains with colour changing jets…really brightened up my journey home when they were on.

While on the subject of Brighton

On the news this morning someone stated that there are enough empty homes in London to house the population of Brighton!

This is hardly surprising considering that Brighton has a population of around 155k, which one would expect to be able to house in a city the size of London when one considers the amount of empty housing and new projects being built.

He didn’t specify whether he meant Brighton alone or the stretch of communities which make up greater Brighton which I believe to be closer to 460k a more substantial amount and therefore slightly more surprising, but to me that still seems like a reasonable amount.

An increase in empty homes in the capital is likely to be linked in some way to the recession, are people foregoing the convenience of working where they live for the lower cost of living elsewhere in ever greater numbers?

Thoughts?

This week’s most amusing search term

Filed under: General — Andreas @ 8:32 am

Someone came here looking for something very specific recently and I thought I would have to share it with the world considering how utterly ridiculous it was. This person searched for “sex on the London to Brighton ride”. (more…)

Now with added support

My tripod came in the mail this morning, so now I’m just waiting for the ball head to arrive.
Annoyingly I can’t reverse the bolt in it so I can have a play with the tripod before the head arrives but I suppose it just means the anticipation will be greater.

The bees are dying

So this is what happened to all the bees.

Dead hive!

Dead hive

I thought a light bulb had burned out in the lighting fixture in the ceiling. The light bulb was fine — dead bees in the glass cup were blocking out the light. (This photo shows only about 1/3 of the bees — the rest fell on the floor when I took out the glass cup.)
